As the time comes to the end in our junior year, college admissions loom over us, or at least those who aspire to go to college. I am definitely part of that group of people, the ones who hold their academics in high regard. So far I have taken my ACT's once, and am retaking them again this upcoming Saturday, and have taken my SAT's twice, so in terms of that I am doing a pretty good job time wise. I have consistently tried my best throughout high school, because I know that when I slack off, then I will not be happy with the result, and I want to keep the respect I have for my schooling. As college applications go in during the fall season, I am starting to realize interviews are fast approaching as well. I have a little bit of experience in college interviews, because last year while I was visiting my brother at Tulane University, I had an interview with the Math Department, because it is one of the schools I am considering.
If I am in the future asked the question...
Why do you want to major in ______________ ?
To start off I would fill in major of Statistics for the blank. Now, why statistics? Let me just pretend this is the answer to the interviewer...so it will be very formal.
-I first grew to love statistics in my sophomore year of High School. At my school in the accelerated program we take Algebra II and Trigonometry as a Sophomore, and included in the subject was a little sub unit on basic Statistics. I loved this unit, and it compelled to take AP Statistics my junior year as one of my electives. This class just solidified my newfound love, and told me Statistics is that niche I had been looking for! My teacher for AP Statistics, Mr. Frisina, was excellent and motivating for the class, and I felt exceptionally for me personally. I feel like continuing on studying this fascinating subject would be like a dream come true, for someone who loves math as much as I do. This school, I feel like would give me an opportunity like no other.
If I am in the future asked the question...
Who in your life has most influenced you?
My mother is definitely the most influential figure in my life. She influences me academically. Since I was little she has always been there, starting with reading my little books, before I myself could read. She helped me with my homework, until the work got above the normal general knowledge. She edited my papers, and still edits them. She is my biggest critic, and also my biggest support. My mother influences me artistically. Although my grades in my academics are all really high, my grades in art classes are as well. She is an artist, and since I can remember I was drawing sketches. There is this little wall above one of my Dad's desks at his office in New York City with pictures I used to draw for him. As time progressed I continued drawing and painting, and then really during my junior year I realized how much I love to paint with oils. My mother's love of art thankfully was translated to me, and painting is now one of the main things that I love to do in any bit of spare time I have. She influences me spiritually. She was raised in a strict Catholic family, but then she married my Dad, who is Jewish. She has already stopped practicing Catholicism, and when it was time to choose which religion to raise us, she completely supported my Dad with his want for raising us Jewish. She works from the house, so often she was the one who would bring us to Hebrew School, and when it was prep time for my Bat Mitzvah, normally she was the one who brought me to prep with my Rabbi. She influences my diet. Cooking all natural is a big deal at my house. I have always been taught to use organic ingredients, and to spice up my food in delicious ways. I consider my self to be a very expressionistic person, and the food that I make, I try to show off my expressionistic allure, as well as when I paint. My mother has influenced me in more senses that I could ever mention, she is the person I aspire to be like when I am older, in every way.
So, although I have only answered a mere two questions, it is very important to practice what I will say at my college interviews. Colleges weight interviews heavily, because they really show a person off of the paper, and my goal is to shine my brightest in these future high stress situations.

So interesting, Johanna, that you participate in and express such diverse aspects of your personality--oftentimes people move in one direction (for example, they may be really creative in terms of music or artistic expression, like painting), but be uninterested in other areas that are more "set," like statistics.... you are so well-rounded--good for you!
ReplyDeleteAnd you should let your mom read your blog--it would mean a lot to her!!
